Kayla Douglas of Club Wolverine, 2010 MHSAA State Champion and All American in the 100 Backstroke signed her National Letter of Intent with Colgate University in Hamilton, New York on May 4, 2011.
Kayla has been recruited and accepted by several top University across the country (Duke University, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, University of Missouri, Oakland University, Ohio State University and Colgate University) I looked at all my options with my coach from Club Wolverine” Bailey Weathers” and what each school had to offer me and they all had great coaches and outstanding swim programs “ Douglas said she wishes she could have committed to all of them” I want to thank all the coaches who recruited me Douglas added”
Colgate University was the best choice for me and my family Douglas said” Coach Canales is incredible coach and person Douglas said” Fernando Canales has a stellar resume when it comes to coaching. Canales, the Mark S. Randall Endowed Coaching Chair for Swimming and Diving, comes to Colgate from the University of Michigan where he served two stints as an assistant coach from 1982-87 and 2006-08, before serving as the Development Officer for Athletics.
Canales has served under legendary coach Jon Urbancheck and
helped to produce 13 Olympians, multiple NCAA national champions
and multiple USA Swimming and foreign national champions. He
assisted the team in winning back-to-back Big Ten Conference team
championships in 1987 and '88.
From 2006-08, Canales served as the head assistant coach at
Michigan under assistant Olympic coach Bob Bowman. During that time
Canales helped three swimmers capture back-to-back NCAA national
championshipsalong with guiding the team to the 2008 Big Ten title.
Douglas said”I’m excited to swim for a coach
that still has ties with Club Wolverine. I will still be part
of Club Wolverine in the summer. Bailey Weathers my club coach and
teammates I have been like a family to me.
This year Colgate University accepted only 760 students for the class of 2015. They reviewed over 7,700 applications. Kayla plans to major in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Psychology. Kayla has enjoyed swimming for Kevin Hafner the Franklin High School girls swim coach and being part of swimming history at Franklin I couldn’t have done it without Kevin, my school and my teammate’s thank you for all of your support Douglas said”
