There were five former or current UM/CW swimmers who made the finals of the men's 400 free on the first night of competition. And former CW swimmer Peter Vanderkaay made the Olympic team with a win in the event. Former CW swimmers MIchael Phelps and Tyler Clary finished 2nd and 3rd in the 400 IM to Ryan Lochte who won the event. Lochte and Phelps make the Olympic team while Clary, who has the world's 3rd best time, did not make the team as only the top 2 finishers are selected.
Vanderkaay adn former UM/CW swimmer Charlie Houchin will return in the semifinals of the 200 free. Current UM/CW swimmer Mike Wynalda is the first alternate.
Also, former CW age group swimmer Allison Schmitt was the top qualifier in the 400 free. The final will be tonight. Schmitt swims collegiately at the University of Georgia but took this year off to train with former UM/CW coach Bob Bowman and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.
Last night was a disappointment for TV viewers as the fireworks show preempted swimming. If that happens again remember you can always watch online at www.nbc.com. Finals each night begin at 8 p.m.
