Progressive Skill Levels

Program Info

Each swimmer's development is measured by progressive skill levels separate from programs, practice groups, or age. The skill levels give swimmers, parents and coaches insight to specific skill development of each athlete and provide a means to track their progress.

LEVEL 1          
Must be able to swim 15-20 feet in any manner (width of CLA/TAP/FOR pool), submerge face and head and be comfortable in a small group setting away from parents/caretakers. Swimmers will learn basic floating, kicking and breathing skills allowing them to kick 25 yards without a flotation aide. Swimmers will also learn basic arm propulsion and swimming skills.
     
LEVEL 2          
Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards in any manner and be comfortable in deep water and in a group setting away from parents/caretakers. Swimmers will learn basic floating, kicking, body balance and breathing skills allowing them to kick repeated distances of 25 yards on the front and back. Swimmers will also learn basic freestyle and backstroke skills (25 yards) and dolphin kick.
     
LEVEL 3          
Swimmers must be able to swim freestyle and backstroke for 25-50 yards. Swimmers will strengthen freestyle and backstroke through drills and kicking, further develop the dolphin kick through drills, and will be introduced to the butterfly and breaststroke. Dives and other competition skills will also be introduced. Level 3 swimmers may participate in novice level competitions.
     
LEVEL 4          
SWIM SKILLS: Continuous Free up to 100 yards; 25 yards of 2 of 3 strokes (Fly/Back/Breast). DEVELOPMENT :All four competitive strokes through kicking and drills with emphasis on 3 legal and propulsive kicks, the butterfly and breaststroke. Basic competitive skills with competitions for fun and teamwork.
     
LEVEL 5          
SWIM SKILLS: Continuous Free up to 200 yards; 25+ yards of strokes (Fly/Back/Breast) with recognizable & propulsive technique; 3 legal propulsive kicks. DEVELOPMENT: All four competitive strokes through kicking and drills with emphasis on getting everything legal and propulsive. Basic competitive skills and competitions for fun and teamwork.
     
LEVEL 6          
SWIM SKILLS: Continuous free up to 200 yards, repeatedly; 25-50 yards of strokes (Fly/Back/Breast) with 99% legal technique; legal kicks for all strokes; endurance to handle repeats of 50, 75 and 100 yards. DEVELOPMENT: All four competitive strokes for up to 50 yards through drills, kicking and basic aerobic conditioning. Stroke rules for racing, pace clock introduction and competitions.  
     
LEVEL 7          
SWIM SKILLS: Continuous free up to 400 yards, repeatedly; 50+ yards of strokes (Fly/Back/Breast) with good technique; endurance and technique to handle practices confidently. DEVELOPMENT: All four competitive strokes through drills, kicking and aerobic conditioning. Mental and physical racing development, dryland excercises and specific goal setting.  
     
LEVEL 8          
SWIM SKILLS: Freestyle repeats up to 400 yards; 100+ yards of all strokes (Fly/Back/Breast) with strong technique; endurance and technique to handle practices confidently with a strong commitment. DEVELOPMENT: All four competitive strokes through drills, kicking, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Mental and physical racing development, dryland excercises and specific goal setting.  
     
LEVEL 9          
SWIM SKILLS: All four competitive strokes in any competitive distance with good technique; mental and physical abilities to handle challenging practices positively, confidently with a solid commitment. DEVELOPMENT: All four competitive strokes through kicking, drills, aerobic and anaerobic training. Development of specific strokes/races and expansion of racing capabilities. Mental and physical endurance for positive commitment to training.
     
LEVEL 10          
SWIM SKILLS: All four competitive strokes in any competitive distance with strong technique; mental and physical ability to be 100% committed to Elite level program. DEVELOPMENT: Swimmers at this levels are Sectional and/or National qualifiers or may be considered for this level based on Head Coaches recommendation.  
     
LEVEL 11
