The Club Wolverine Gold Team offers a learn to swim and conditioning program for children and teens who have their doctor’s approval.   This program seeks to improve the energy level and pain control of children and teens who are undergoing and recovering from cancer therapy and many other chronic diseases and conditions. Recently the program expanded to include children with autism.

If you know of someone who would benefit from this program, please contact Cathy Dowling by phone at 734-663-7256 or email at cwgoldteam@gmail.com.

If you like to work with children, are an active member of CW and are in at least eighth grade or above, please fill out the application to apply to help with this program.  Please email your application to Cathy Dowling who will keep a list of interested volunteers.

 HISTORY

Club Wolverine’s Gold Group began in 2009, when CW alumni member, Ellen Dowling (Huron/Notre Dame) returned to swimming after being diagnosed with stage IVA Hodgkin’s lymphoma.   Club Wolverine funds this program from the generous donations of CW friends and families and a portion of the CW annual swim-a-thon they host each spring.

 GOALS

The CW Gold Team seeks to improve the energy level and pain control of children and teens who are undergoing and recovering from cancer therapy and many other chronic diseases and conditions.  Other goals include improving overall fitness and general well-being.  This program started in 2009 with the encouragement of University of Michigan pediatric oncologists who saw the benefits experienced by their young cancer patients who engaged in regular exercise. Swimming is an excellent low-impact all-body exercise that enhances large muscle strength and coordination.  It is a safe exercise for patients who are immune-compromised as chlorinated water is nearly sterile which minimizes the risk of infections.

The people served are children and teenagers (ages 4-18) who are undergoing or recovering from chemo and radiation therapy.  Patients thus far have come by referral from the UM Cancer Center.  Experienced coaches from Club Wolverine work with swimmers at any developmental level to provide individually tailored workouts and improve swimming skills.  Siblings are welcome to participate if space is available.

Club Wolverine wishes to keep the Gold Team free for swimmers and ensure that every patient who could benefit from this program learns about it.  Funds raised will be used to:  1)  Promote the CW Gold Team to pediatric cancer patients at the University of Michigan through a) professionally printed brochures b) posters to hang around the UM hospital—especially the cancer center and examination rooms c) mailings to families with cancer patients (current or recovering from treatment)  2)  Purchase swimming gear for the swimmers- including suits, goggles, and backpacks.  3)  Purchase post-workout snacks for the swimmers.  4)  Pay for coaching fees for the gold swim group. 5)  Pay for liability insurance (via USA Swimming Membership dues) for the children participating.

CW Gold Team Volunteers

If you are in 8th grade or above and would like to get volunteer hours for school or community service credit come volunteer to swim and assist with the CW Gold Team on Wednesday or Friday at the Mack pool from 4:30-5:30 PM.   We have a few patient-swimmers signed up and plan to have more added. Coach Laura is coaching this group and would like to have a schedule of 2-4 volunteers available each practice.   This is a great way to help a child experience a group activity that makes them feel like a normal kid.   It is so rewarding to watch the smiles on the these children and on the faces of our CW swimmers who volunteer.

The schedule may change from season to season.   Below is an application with the necessary information needed to volunteer.  Please email your answers in to Coach Laura at locowley@aol.com.   There will be periodic training provided by UM personnel.
